The puzzle games I keep on my phone for the commute
A commute puzzle game has a specific job. It needs to load fast, play one-handed, and let you stop at any moment when your stop arrives. A lot of great puzzle games fail that test by locking you into long levels.
My favourites are the ones built around short, discrete challenges. You solve a board, feel a little clever, and put the phone away. No streaks to maintain, no energy running out while you're underground.
I also lean toward games that teach through play instead of pop-up tutorials. The best ones introduce a new mechanic with a level you can only solve one way, so you learn without reading anything.
One warning: avoid puzzle games that gate hints behind a connection. I've watched people get stuck on a train with a hint button that simply wouldn't work offline. Test that before you rely on it.
Keep two or three installed and rotate. Even the best puzzle game gets stale if it's the only thing you ever open.
